A major redevelopment of central Christchurch’s busiest bus stops is nearly complete, with the new Health Precinct bus bays and shelters ready for use from 21 October.
Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive, John Bridgman, says it is pleasing to have completed the project almost a month ahead of schedule.
“Given the scale of the work both on and under this section of Tuam Street and the additional effort required to keep it open to traffic, completing this project ahead of schedule is testament to the effort of everyone involved.
“The 120-metre section of Tuam Street has been widened by six metres to include three new bus bays on either side of the road. This means buses travelling west will now be able to pull out of the bus lane to pick up and drop off passengers, rather than stopping in the bus lane as they used to. East-bound buses will also have more spaces to stop in.
“This change will improve the efficiency of the service at what is the central city’s busiest bus stop, outside of the Interchange.
“The new bus bays also have raised kerbs, so there is a reduced step up or down for people entering or exiting a bus. This will improve accessibility for people visiting the Health Precinct, and in time the nearby Metro Sports Facility.
“Passers-by will also notice the traffic island which holds a rain garden, over 2000 new plants and five new trees, bringing more greenery to the central city as well as treating rainwater running off the road.
“Around 500 metres of new kerb has been installed as part of the project and 35,000 pavers laid, to link the area to the City Promenade.
“The bus stop work is Ōtākaro’s final project in the An Accessible City programme. I would like to thank everyone for their patience on the roads during this time,” says Mr Bridgman.
