Central Christchurch’s new waterfront is now complete with the opening of the City Promenade.
The 2km promenade runs along Oxford Terrace, from the Hospital to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground and is a significant part of the $120m Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct Anchor Project.
Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive, John Bridgman says the City Promenade will make for a special summer in the city.
“The Promenade has been designed to turn the city around to face and embrace the river like never before.
You can get right down to the water’s edge and feed the eels if you dare or take a spot on one the many seats lining the river and just relax.
The bars and restaurants along The Terraces have offered us a taste of what’s to come right along the City Promenade. The Riverside Farmers Market is on the way next year and visitors to Te Pae will begin walking out of their conventions and events onto the Promenade in 2020.
When fleshing out the future shape of the city locals were quick to identify the need for a more compact central city that was greener and easier to get around. The Promenade delivers on that by connecting to Rauora Park to the east and to the South Frame to the west to create a new route for people around the CBD,” says Mr Bridgman.
Around 500 trees, 29,000 plants, 600,000 pavers and 34 artworks and installations have gone into creating the City Promenade and greater Avon River Precinct.
Mr Bridgman says he appreciates everyone’s patience while this work has been carried out.
“This was a transformational project and it’s great to now have the fences and cones out of Oxford Terrace.
Please be mindful of other people on the City Promenade as we all get used to this new shared space.”
